The Best Oils for Soothing Winter Skin

Cold winter temperatures and dry air-conditioned indoor heat can contribute to skin irritation, break-outs and redness as well as dry, damaged and brittle hair. In this article we explore the best oils for soothing winter skin which can help to maintain your skin’s natural oil balance and create stronger protective cell barriers.

In the winter cold temperatures and low humidity levels create dry air which draws the moisture out of the skin.

This is made worse when your skin is exposed to snow or cold water repeatedly if you do a lot of winter sports and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis can become more pronounced. Because dry air makes your skin create more sebum, you are more likely to suffer clogged pores and breakouts during the winter months too.

Our favourite oils for soothing winter skin

Argan Oil

Argan Oil, Cold Pressed Deodorised is packed with Vitamin E which can help nourish and protect skin from damage caused by free radicals. It also helps to boost hydration and lock in moisture, providing deep cell hydration. Argan Oil is non-comedogenic and it can be used as a cleansing oil to clear away oil, dirt and makeup from pores and balancing the skin’s natural sebum production. Argan Oil can be applied directly to skin and is widely used as a cleansing facial oil.

Flax Seed Oil

Flax Seed Oil Cold Pressed Organic is rich in Vitamin E and Omega 9 helping to improve the elasticity of skin, providing improved texture and firmness. It is packed with essential fatty acids which give deep hydration to skin, hair and lips. Flax Seed on its own has a high comedogenic rating which means that it can sometimes clog pores so should be used topically for particular areas of dry skin or combined with other carrier oils. However this profile means that it is ideal for lip care to overcome chapped winter lips. It can be directly applied to lips to give deep hydration to boost softness and is perfect for lip oil or balm formulations.

Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp Seed Oil, Cold Pressed Organic has a high GLA content which helps to build the skin’s barrier and aid in hydrating and repairing damaged skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce swelling and redness and prevent flakiness and itchiness. Because of its ability to combat dry skin, Hemp Oil is widely used in moisturising lotions, butters and balms, especially for handcare.

Passion Seed Oil

Passion Seed Oil Cold Pressed Organic, also known as Maracuja Oil is rich in antioxidants. It’s soothing effects on inflammation and sunburn mean that this is the perfect oil to apply when you’ve been on the slopes all day or you’re on a hot-weather get-away.

Peach Kernel Oil

Peach Kernel Oil refined is a lightweight, fragrance free oil that is easily absorbed into skin and hair. Cold weather can leave the hair feeling dry and damaged resulting in scalp irritation and high breakage. Applying Peach Kernel Oil, either directly to hair or through shampoos, conditioners, masks or massage oil can help to protect damaged hair ends, strengthening follicles and soothing frizz.

Occasionally skin can break through prolonged exposure to the cold which can lead to soreness, redness, inflammation and irritation. Using the oils above will help to moisturise skin and provide elasticity to help it repair but you can also add healing essential oils like Tea Tree to help clean and heal wounds more effectively.
