Explore the benefits of Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil

Tea Tree Essential Oil is widely known for its powerful health benefits.

Originally used by the Aboriginal people of Australia, Tea Tree oil is now used around the world for its antibacterial, healing qualities that prevent infection and its versatile profile making it ideal for skincare, haircare, cleaning and deodorant products.

Our Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil is available in Organic and Conventional varieties and supports a strategic sustainability project in New South Wales, helping to restore Koala habitat.

What is Tea Tree Essential Oil?

Tea Tree Essential Oil is made by steam distilling leaves from the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree which is native to Southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The tree has white fluffy flowers and smooth, thin leaves that are rich in oil.  These leaves are placed in a still, where steam and water vapour are passed over them, the steam carries the oil away from the botanic material and then separates out, leaving a fragrant and pure essential oil.

What are the benefits of Tea Tree Oil for skin & hair?

Tea Tree Essential Oil is historically known for its wound healing benefits but it can also be used in skin and haircare, as well as pet care and household use. These are some of our top benefits of Australia Tea Tree Essential Oil:

Improves dandruff and hair breakage by reducing inflammation and irritation on the scalp as well helping to stop build up of hair products, excess oil and bacteria that can increase breakage and thinning.

Reduces redness, blemishes and spots by controlling the formation and spread of acne causing bacteria and balancing the production of sebum to prevent oily skin

Helps wound healing and reduce the risk of infection and scarring because its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties help to prevent the chronic inflammation of the lower dermis layer which can lead to scarring.

It’s antifungal qualities can help skin infections and help to repair and boost the strength and appearance of damage nails

It can help soothe congestion and ease colds and sore throats

How can Tea Tree Essential Oil be used?

Tea Tree, like all essential oils, can irritate the skin if applied directly. To avoid irritation, dilute tea tree oil with carrier oils or water. It may be safe for small topical use but it’s best to seek medical advice before you do. Even so, there are lots of ways to use Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil to help access its incredible benefits, these are our favourites:

In a Diffuser
Using Tea Tree Essential Oil in a diffuser can help release the benefits of Tea Tree into your home and help to remove musty odours. It blends well with lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary and lemon for a calming, clean air scent. Be aware that many essential oils, including Tea Tree can be toxic to animals when used in diffusers.

Massage & Aromatherapy Oils
Tea Tree can be blended with other carrier oils and used for massage to detoxify and disinfect the body, as well as providing a stress-reducing fragrance.

Skin Moisturisers and Cleansing oils
Including Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil in face washes, cleansing oils and moisturisers can help reduce inflammation and redness as well as helping to combat acne. Diluting Tea Tree in non-comedogenic oils like Argan Oil or Jojoba can help to clear dirt and oil from pores and balance the skin’s sebum production.

Shampoos & Conditioners
Shampoos and conditioners can carry all of the benefits of tea tree oil to the scalp and hair. Including this essential oil in your formulation can help to reduce itching and dry skin as well as preventing breakage and strengthening hair.

Hand Sanitisers
Tea Tree is a great inclusion when creating a natural hand sanitizer that kills bacteria without harsh chemicals or alcohols. Check out our recipe for natural hand sanitizer with Australian Tea Tree Essential Oil and Aloe Vera Cosmetic Clear Gel.

Insect Repellent
Tea Tree Essential Oil can be used as a natural insect repellent when combined with other essentials like citronella, lavender and lemongrass, diluted in a freshwater mix. It also helps to reduce the itchiness and inflammation of bites.

Natural Deodorants
Including Tea Tree Oil in deodorant formulations can help to combat bacteria build ups that causes body odour.

All Purpose Cleaner
Mixing tea tree oil with white vinegar and water creates a fantastic natural multi purpose cleaner for the home. Adding in other citrus or lavender essential oils can also help your home to smell fresh and clean.

Petcare Shampoos and Conditioners
Used in diluted amounts in petcare shampoos and conditioners and all rinse-off products. This can help soothe and calm minor skin irritations on pets and animals.

Supporting Koala Reserves

We love our Australian Tea Tree Essential because it provides fantastic benefits for the skin, hair and the home. But it’s also helping to rebuild natural habitat for Koalas in Australia. The 2019 bushfires and subsequent flooding in New South Wales have had a huge impact on Koala habitat there. The farm that we work with has dedicated resources to restoring a natural Koala reserve to help the local population grow and thrive.

The project is providing 1.5km of strategic Koala corridors and 1.25km of riparian vegetation to reduce Koala group fragmentation and assist in biodiveristy and breeding. Based  in the lower Richmond River catchment near Byron Bay, the project  is establishing over 12,000 new plants and helping to restore degraded remnant vegetation across 10 hectares.
